A couple of West Branch Middle School STEM students used technology to help a local farmer recently.
According to a message on the school’s website, the farmer bought two used insecticide boxes for his corn planter only to discover that the small plastic covers were missing from the bottom of the boxes.
After learning that he couldn’t buy just the covers from a dealer but would need to pay $70 each for the entire lower portion of the box, the farmer reached out to West Branch STEM teacher Denise Ginocchi to find out if the covers could be printed on the school’s 3D printer.
With the help of students Joel Sanor and Everett Zippay, the covers were created and delivered to the farmer.
STEM education integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in which students investigate and engineer solutions to problems and explain real-world phenomena.
West Branch offers K-12 STEM programs.
